Mr Karim has been a consultant urological surgeon in the ThamesValley area for 14 years and St Mary’s Paddington since 2005. He specialises in diseases of the prostate and kidney with a particular expertise in robotic surgery for prostate and kidney cancer.
Mr Omer Karim is one of the first and most experienced, formally trained robotic surgeons in the UK. He started robotic surgery in 2004 and has been involved in over 250 successful robotic operations for prostate cancer. Prior to helping establish robotic urological surgery in the UK, he had performed over 500 open radical prostate cancer operations. He trained in the UK and did his postgraduate research in the USA. He has been instrumental in the development of our understanding of the nature of prostate disease and in developing treatment techniques, such as laser surgery treatment for enlarged prostates. He is the Trust’s lead in Prostate Cancer (East Berks) with a special interest in green light laser surgery, stone surgery and robotic surgery. He is also a consultant robotic surgeon to St Mary’s, Paddington, a UK trainer in robotic surgery and examiner for in-service examination for urology trainees.
He did his undergraduate medical degree at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School and trained in teaching hospitals in the UK and the USA.
Mr Karim has a firm commitment to research, teaching and continuous medical education both in the UK and abroad. He regularly attends national and international meetings. He is actively involved in training urology Specialist Registrars and fellow consultant surgeons in robotic surgery. Mr Karim has links with and visits urology departments in the Third World. He is keen to encourage exchange visits between the UK and hospitals abroad, fostering opportunities for teaching and training junior urologists for the benefit of patients.
In addition, to his clinical activities, Mr Karim is a director of several companies. He is Chairman of one of these companies, an AIM listed medical diagnostic company, which focuses it’s research and development skills on innovative, point-of-care technology for urology.
